About The Event

This four-week course will take place every Monday, from July 22th through August 12th, 9:30-10:30am. During registration, you'll have the option of purchasing a nature exploration kit. See bottom for details.

Here are the general topics we will discuss  each week:

  • Week 1 (July 15): Introduction to equipment and bird watching

During this class, children will be introduced to binoculars and how to keep a nature journal. We will talk about safety during outdoor exploration and take a short walk around the block to play a bird-scavenger hunt game.

  • Week 2 (July 22): Nature journaling and Symbiosis

This week we'll learn about keeping a nature journal. We'll discuss how to look for "field markers" and take notes on plants and animals found. We'll take another walk around the block to a nearby park where we will take notes on our findings and press flowers. Here I will also point out any native plants or wildlife we find, discussing how and why they may be thriving in our area or struggling.

  • Week 3 (July 29): Bird Feeders

This week's activity will give children the opportunity to try out their bird watching skills at home! Bird feeders will come with seed and will be ready to hang right away! We'll also talk about other ways to attract wildlife to their homes.

  • Week 4 (August 5): Flower Planting

During this class, children will learn about the parts of a flower as they each dissect their own. We'll talk about pollinators and why they are important. We will finish up this class with planting flowers to take home. These flowers will be the kind to attract butterflies and hummingbirds to your own yard!

A nature kit is recommended for this class. This kit includes binoculars, a water bottle, a nature journal, a "birds of Utah" pamphlet, and a hat. These are items that we will be using for multiple classes. If you do not purchase the kit, I recommend acquiring these items on your own for your child to bring. Much of what I include in this kit can be found at Michael's, Walmarts, Target, or Amazon.com. Contact me with questions about brands I'll be using or for recommendations. *Nature Kits are only available for purchase through July 11!*

These classes will be partially or fully outdoors. Make sure your child is wearing sun screen and has appropriate clothing. Parents are welcome to stay for these classes. I only request that you do not distract from the activities. Please be sure you are also wearing clothing and shoes appropriate for walking in the warm weather.

These classes are meant to build off of each other, and are therefore combined into a course. Please make sure each date will work for you so your child can make it to every class. Additional information about this class will be sent out before the first class.

At the end of these summer courses, at 10am on August 12th, I will offer a truly unique opportunity! One of the organizations I volunteer with, HawkWatch International, will allow me to do a private program with my students to introduce some live birds of prey up close and personal! On this morning, we will meet at the HawkWatch office in Sugarhouse and spend an hour getting to know a couple of their birds. There will be an opportunity to ask questions and take pictures after the presentation. Students, their parents, and their siblings are welcome!
