DIY Taste-Safe Dough Kit

Below you will find all the recipes for the DIY Taste-Safe Dough Kits, along with some tips and tricks!

Remember, all of these recipes are taste-safe, but that doesn't mean they taste good!

Chocolate Dough

Ingredients

1 c Flour 1 Tbsp Cream of tartar

1/2 c Salt 1 Tbsp Vegetable oil

1/4 c Cocoa powder 1 c Boiling water

First mix all dry ingredients together in a heat-safe mixing bowl. Mix in the oil, followed carefully by the boiling water. Mix with a spoon as best you can and allow the dough to cool enough to be handled. Knead the dough by hand on a tray, cutting board, or table, adding a little more flour if it is still sticky or water if it is too dry. Store and refrigerate in an air-tight container for 3-5 days.

Tips:

Kids love creating "treats" with this dough, molding it into pies, chocolate bars and cakes! Throw in some cookie cutters for an extra good time!

Peppermint Dough

Ingredients

1 c Flour 1 Tbsp Peppermint extract

1/2 c Salt 10 drops Red food coloring

2 tsp Cream of tartar 1 c Boiling peppermint tea or water

1 1/2 Tbsp Vegetable oil

First mix all dry ingredients together in a heat-safe mixing bowl. Mix in the oil and peppermint extract. On the stove or microwave, warm up 1 c water until just boiling (add the tea packet if using). Add red food coloring to the water/tea before pouring the hot liquid into the flour mixture. Mix with a spoon as best you can and allow the dough to cool enough to be handled. Knead the dough by hand on a tray, cutting board, or table, adding a little more flour if it is still sticky or water if it is too dry. Store and refrigerate in an air-tight container for 3-5 days.

Tips:

Split the recipe or double to make two different batches in different colors! Mix and match white, pink, red, or green for a variety of pepperminty patterns.

Extra Tips

As you can see, these are just a few variations on a very similar recipe. If you have a favorite scent or spice, don't hesitate to switch some of these extracts or spices for one of your choosing. Love all things pumpkin? Make a pumpkin spice dough with pumpkin spice seasoning and orange food coloring! Love the fall time? Make doughs in different shades of orange, browns, and reds with spices such as nutmeg, ginger, and cinnamon.

Also keep in mind that some kids' hands can be sensitive to different spices or extracts. My son would get red around his mouth when he ate cinnamon toast, but the dough did not seem to bother him. Just keep an eye on your little ones to make sure the dough isn't bothering their skin or causing an allergic reaction.

Just another reminder - while this dough is taste-safe, it tastes nasty! These doughs are mostly flour and salt. They smell amazing, but your children will quickly learn after a small taste that good smell does not equal good taste. This is probably a good thing, since eating a lot of this dough will probably give them tummy aches.

Lastly, although it would be best to toss these doughs within a week, truthfully I have had mine in the fridge for about two weeks and they are still good and played with regularly. Use your best judgement.
